Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine

Orthopaedics is a branch of medicine involved with the correction or prevention of deformities, or injuries of the skeleton and associated structures. Orthopaedists treat a variety of diseases and situations, including torn ligaments, fractures, and dislocations, sprains and strains, tendon injuries, sciatica, pulled muscles and bursitis, ruptured disks, low back pain, osteoporosis and arthritis, muscular dystrophy, bone tumors, and cerebral palsy.

Sports medicine is a field of medicine that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries associated with sports activities and exercise. Sports medicine bridges the gap between science and practice in the promotion of exercise and health, and in the scientific evaluation, study and understanding of sports performance. The healthcare providers have specialized training to restore function to injured patients so they can get moving again as soon as possible. Sports medicine has always been difficult to define because it is not a single specialty, however an area that entails health care professionals, researchers, and educators from a wide variety of disciplines.
